Our activities and programmes aim to help people to be happier – to connect, to manage stress, to build confidence and self-esteem, to develop habits for a healthy lifestyle and to enjoy themselves.
We know that sport is good for people and society: it improves physical and mental wellbeing, individual development, social and community development and employment, training and education. Since May 2007 we have worked with over 9,000 members of the community, representing over 250,000 hours of contact. We work with 25% of local schools and over 10 youth & family support agencies.
In our work with young people we know 76% of our participants moved up 3 levels of our engagement and progression matrix, 20% moved up 4 levels with 4% progressing into volunteering. Many of the people who volunteer with us move on to paid work.
We know that we change lives – the positive impact of our work reduces long term costs to society by improving
- Physical Health: – for adults, doing 30 minutes of at least moderate intensity physical activity on at least 5 days a week helps to prevent and manage over 20 chronic conditions, including coronary heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, cancer, obesity, mental health problems and musculoskeletal conditions.
- Psychological health and wellbeing: – Participation in physical activity and sport has been shown to be effective for reducing the risk of: depression, emotional disturbance, psychological distress and Alzheimer’s. Evidence also shows that physical activity can enhance psychological well-being, by improving self-perception and self-esteem, mood and sleep quality, and by reducing levels of anxiety and fatigue.
We are really excited to be re-launching as Positive Activities as we move into our 10th year of operation. In 2017 we will be celebrating 10 years of working with communities in North East Lincolnshire. We are proud that we have grown from a single angling project (Get Hooked on Fishing) originally supported by Shoreline Housing, in 2007 to the organisation we are now. On the way we have developed and adapted our services and became Get Hooked on Positive Activities (GHoPA) in 2010. We are now simply Positive Activities.
