On the back of last year’s success, we are out again thanks to support from the “Sportivate” Fund and one of the first sporting programmes we have delivered this year has been to students of the Cambridge Park Academy in Grimsby. The six week programme has given a mixed group of 14 students the opportunity to “catch the spirit” and try their hand at the fast and up and coming sport of Ultimate Frisbee.

Ultimate Frisbee is a non-contact team sport consisting of a mixture of American Football and Netball. Teams try to pass the disc amongst themselves and try to score in a defined area without their opponents intercepting or catching the disc and scoring in the opposed scoring zone. Played at a very fast pace, there are an unlimited number of substitutes allowed during a game and it is self-governing ,so therefore there are no referees and competitors compete against each other by “catching the spirit” of the game and playing it in a friendly and Cooperative manner.

As Cambridge Park is known for supporting young people with special needs, the disc sport programme has proved a huge success in engaging people who don’t generally engage with sporting activities and in improving their mobility, hand eye co-ordination and teamwork skills.

With this sport building in popularity and demand for our services increasing, we have a need to develop some additional “Disc Sport” coaches. Through support from North East Lincolnshire’s, Young Peoples Support Service, there’s an opportunity for a limited number of young people to book a place on the level 1 Ultimate Frisbee Leader course taking place on 29th July from 9am to 3pm for 16-21 year olds. GHoPA supported the Lincs2Guidance Skills Show with Laser Biathlon this year engaging with over 250 young people.

The Lincs2Guidance Skills Show Experience is a hands-on careers event which was held at Grimsby Auditorium, on 1st July that offered young people and jobseekers (16-24) in our region the chance to find out all about the wealth of career opportunities available in Lincolnshire and North East Lincolnshire.

The Skills Show Experience, part of the WorldSkills competitions, is a nationwide programme of over 220 events throughout the year, which aims to inspire over 200,000 young people across the country to realise their potential by ‘Having a Go’ at interactive activities and receive guidance to help them shape their future.

GHoPA recently supported North East Lincolnshire first Inter Schools Angling Championship.

The team results where as follows:

GHoPA recently received funding from “Sportivate” part of the Olympic legacy to provide 2 blocks of Archery & 2 blocks of Angling to selected groups of participants aged 14-25 years.

ARCHERY

The first block of archery has been successfully delivered to students at John Whitgift Academy. All participants attended the six week course.

The archery course, used as an enrichment programme was specifically designed to inspire confidence, self-esteem, social skills and introduce students to the sport of archery which is proving to be very popular with young people in our region.

Students were taught safety, etiquette, equipment components and various shooting techniques by GHoPA’s fully accredited coaching staff.

At the end of the 6 week “Sportivate” programme each participant received a well-earned certificate of achievement and their photograph was featured in the local Evening Telegraph newspaper.

ANGLING

GHoPA has also successfully completed the first 6 week block of “Sportivate” funding enabling the project to deliver another hugely popular coarse angling programme at its new lakes at Millennium Park Humberston.

A mixed group attended all of the sessions and came through a referral process from two of the area’s leading youth support organisations, YMCA and Shalom.

Each individual was supported in terms of their own needs and in the level of tuition. Both user groups integrated extremely well and were supportive to each other.

All participants enjoyed the new environmental facility and some caught their very first ever fish and others caught their personal best.

Each participant received a certificate of achievement after completing the course and their photograph was featured in the local Evening Telegraph newspaper.

To further support the students beyond the 6 week programme, each who attended all sessions were presented with a 1 year national angling licence worth £27.00.

2 other “Sportivate” funded programmes are planned for September delivering Archery at Ormiston Maritime Academy & Angling at John Whitgift Academy.

GHoPA is currently involved in talent match. This is a 5.2 million pound grant to help NEETs (Not in Employment, Education or Training).

To help gather information about the barriers that young people face when trying to find employment or look into further education. Mark Fenty, managing director at GHoPA put together the Young people’s forum to gather the information that was needed.

The Young people’s forum was a huge success with a number of young people from various organisations as well as the YMCA coming and sharing their opinion about what issues there are and how we might overcome them.
