What a suberb day it turned our to be for the very first E Factor Business Hive business challenge
Businesses from all over the region took part in four team challenges provided by local community group Positive Activities (formerly GHoPA)
The event took place at the stunning venue of Healing Manor who provided fine food and drinks throughout the day which included a splendid sit down buffet after all competitors had finished their challenges.
Mark Webb, E Factir boss and his team of Business Hive planners made sure all guests had really suberb time.
The four challenges were Laser Clay Pigeon Shooting, Disc Golf, Laser Biathlon and Archery all provided by Positive Activities (formerly GHoPA).
The battle for top honours finished with the DONG team winning by only 12 points.
Managing Director of Positive Activities (formerly GHoPA) Mark Fenty was delighted to provide the activities at such a wonderful venue and also thanked his team for all of their hard work throughout the day.
Mark says “word will soon spread about this fantastic event. which means that next years event which will once again be a sell out..
The Positive Activities (formerly GHoPA) “not for profit” organisation donated a activities package worth £500 to DONG the winners and it looks like they will donate it to a local charity Doorstep.

Andrew Dudgeon
Andrew started as a complete novice 1 year ago. He found that he really enjoyed archery and progressed rapidly. He has since purchased his own bow and arrows after advice from the Positive Activities (formerly GHoPA coaches and has achieved a high standard of archery. He now wishes to progress further in the sport by coaching other people. He has also introduced his teenage daughter to archery and has purchased a bow for her and helped to coach her to a good standard.
Peter Topliss
This 87 year old gentleman watched various people try archery at one of our taster sessions. We asked him if he would like to try the sport and he replied that he would like to but he couldn’t as he was blind in one eye and partially sighted in the other. We encouraged him to have a go, which he did with some success. We invited him to come to our Sunday archery sessions but he told us he had no transport and that he couldn’t come. Positive Activities (formerly GHoPA arranged with him to take him to the session every Sunday and back home. He now attends every week and enjoys every minute. It gives him something to look forward to and has made him feel younger and more confident.
Brooke Saxton
One of our younger participants Brooke, has some major medical conditions and social communication issues. We are very aware that we need to take on-board these restrictive conditions and carry out special coaching for him to enjoy the sessions. We are pleased to say his parents are delighted at his progress and eagerness to attend the sessions and say that they have seen a vast improvement in him.
Business Hive boss Mark Webb, commissioned “not for profit” social enterprise Positive Activities (formerly GHoPA) Get Hooked on Positive Activities to deliver their very first Business to Business Challenge Event at Healing Manor on Friday 25th September.
The event was a great day for Positive Activities (formerly GHoPA) and Business Hive. The weather was great, the venue was stunning and some of the regions’ finest businesses turned out in force to take part in one of the most entertaining business networking events of the year.
The Business Hive team led by Sam, Jo, Carrie and Mark Webb ensured that all participants were enjoying themselves and had an ample supply of food and drinks throughout the day. The four business challenges included the highly addictive Laser Clay Pigeon Shooting, Archery, Frisbee Disc Golf and Biathlon Laser Target Shooting activities.
The business teams of up to 5 people began to practice the activities from 12.30am till 2pm. All of the participants had the chance to try and improve their skills at all 4 challenges before the competition started at 2pm. The Positive Activities (formerly GHoPA) coaches were there to offer guidance throughout the day.
At 2pm, the business to business challenge event commenced. The teams had to complete all four challenges with the best score to win and some (of the really keen teams) had a second attempt to increase their team score. What a battle as the teams competed to bring home the bacon for their organisations.
Most teams were just having fun but it soon became clear that some teams were very competitive and out to win the coveted trophy and the title of winner on the day.
The competition finished after a well fought battle and plenty of networking between the teams. All participants then returned to the recently refurbished barn inside the Manor where they were treated to a superb buffet and more drinks.
Mark Webb announced the winners as DONG Energy, who were presented with a trophy from the Business Hive and a corporate entertainment package worth £500 kindly donated by Mark Fenty, the Managing Director of Positive Activities (formerly GHoPA).
Mark Fenty was extremely pleased with the event and said “It is good to work with commercial business. Positive Activities (formerly GHoPA) provided a unique corporate service which everyone really enjoyed. We want all businesses to know that by entering this competition, it helped our “not for profit” organisation to raise vital funds so that we can continue to deliver to our social mission.
Mark Webb commented “this was the first B2B challenge and it was a sell-out. Already we have bookings for the next business to business networking challenge”.
Mark Webb added “Positive Activities (formerly GHoPA) did an incredibly professional job. I hope the success of this event will generate leads from any company or individual who is considering a celebration event or perhaps a reward or team building event”.

CHARITIES teamed up to tee off for their third annual golf day.
Teams took to the greens of Grimsby Golf Club to raise both money and awareness for YMCA Humber and GHoPA (Get Hooked on Positive Activities).
Both charities work tirelessly in the local area to provide opportunities for vulnerable young people.
Malcolm Smith, CEO of YMCA Humber, said: “We work closely with GHoPA.
“It makes sense for us to work together as we are working with the same groups of people.
“We have recently taken over the local authority for youth service and work with disadvantaged young people getting them into training and employment.
“The golf day is a bit of fun to raise awareness of the work we do.”
Mark Fenty, managing director of GHoPA, added: “We work to provide positive activities for young people.”
A total of 21 teams of four took part, a turnout the charities were very impressed with.
Each team taking part paid £120 to enter.
Mr Fenty said: “This year’s event has been a real success.
“We hope to continue having a golf day year after year.”
During the day on the fairways, teams were treated to a bacon bun and then fresh Grimsby fish and chips in the evening.
For the non-golfers, there was also the opportunity for businesses to sponsor a tee for the event.
There was also a raffle and auction to add to the coffers.
Over 40 organisations donated prizes and the auction included items such as a Frank Bruno boxing glove, a dart board signed by Phil “The Power” Taylor and a signed Swansea City FC football shirt.
“We have had tremendous support,” Mr Fenty said.
“It’s been a really fun day and there’s been a bit of friendly rivalry.”
Mr Smith added: “It’s been a good chance as charities to mingle with the businesses we work with and they can know more about what we do and why we do it.”
At the end of the competition there was a presentation for the winners.

THE Friends Around Weelsby are champion fundraisers.
Supporters of the residents’ group helped raise money to take children to the pantomime at Grimsby Auditorium in December by taking part in games and buying goods at stalls.
They organised a gala fun day in Weelsby Woods, Grimsby, which included archery delivered by GHoPA, boxing, cake stalls and tug-of-war competition. The family event was officially opened by The Mayor of North East Lincolnshire, Councillor Cliff Barber, who was joined by the MP for Grimsby, Melanie Onn, and ward councillors for Heneage, Councillors Matthew Patrick and Ros James.
They praised the organisers, Stella Rush, chairman of the group, and treasurer, Pat Beck. The Mayor said: “I do hope it will become an annual event as the money raised, not only today but other events, will go towards local children attending the Christmas pantomime at the auditorium.
“A big thank you to everyone who has been involved in making it a success.” Councillor James said: “They are a relatively new group. A lot of hard work has gone into it and it deserves to be a success.” Councillor Patrick said: “It is fantastic. From the start, it was surprising how much was added to all the attractions.”
Treasurer Pat Beck said: “It is the end of the summer holidays and nice for all the families to get together before going back to school. None of it costs much as we wanted to make it affordable to families and all the money will be spent locally.” Chairman Stella Rush said: “The cakes have been flying off the table and we sold most of them within the first half an hour. It is good to know all the money will be going to subsidise the pantomime trip and people know the money is staying in Grimsby.”
The Connected project has been designed to help those who are struggling to use new technology such as Tablets, iPads and smartphones.
We believe the people who will benefit most from this programme will be those who are suffering from social isolation. We plan to help them reconnect with their friends, families and the wider community. Connected is coming soon to an area near you and we would like you to encourage all the people you know who need help using technology to come and join up. Now I guess you are wondering what we can offer people who come onto this programme, the answer is… what they want to learn. The programme is designed to be completely flexible and based around the user’s needs. This can be learning how to do online banking, shopping online or maybe even learning about bookmarking and how to do it on their smartphones. We don’t just focus on using the internet; we can also offer different ways to backup all of their favourite photos and videos by showing them how to save onto SD cards or via the cloud on Dropbox.
This is only one of many ways GHoPA is planning to help the community of Grimsby, along with other programmes and activities we offer. This can only be a positive and give people more incentive to engage in positive activities.

The coaches at GHoPA were introduced to Dave (Brooks’ father) through a community event.
He explained how Brook has various health problems and was unsure whether Archery would be something he could do. With much reassurance from the coaches here at GHoPA, Brook tried Archery. Brook now attends the Open Archery Sessions held every Sunday 10am – 12noon at the YMCA Peaks Lane Grimsby. He has gained so much confidence and self-belief, the Archery is also helping him with his concentration which he uses in his day-to-day life. Brook has also gained a higher level of fitness due to taking part in the Archery Session. He could only manage an hour at the start, whereas now he can do the full two hours. Brook enjoys every minute of his time with the GHoPA coaches.

During our Sunday Archery sessions which are held at YMCA Peaks Lane every week, we have a very talented 8 year old named Esme. She has been coming to the weekly sessions from the beginning.
Esme’s mother had tried to get her into archery as it was something she was very interested in. Despite trying several organisations who were not willing to take her. Her mother had done some research and found GHoPA through our website.
Lead Archery Coach, Michael Burley explains “Esme is a very talented young individual. We are lucky to have her join us every week. Esme has shown what a natural talent she has for Archery. She is such a pleasure to teach as she is like a sponge taking all the instructions in from the coaches, and is getting better on every session. I as a coach believe that she is one of the most naturally talented youngsters I have had the pleasure to teach in the last twelve years of coaching.”
Esme is so excited and cannot wait for Sunday’s to come around each week.

We first met young Peter, an 87 year old widower at a Good Neighbours event in Humberston. Our organisation supported the event by providing an archery taster session free of charge to visitors.
Peter had always wanted to try archery but because he has no sight in 1 eye and only has around 20% sight in the other, he thought it was an activity he could never ever take part in. Peter spoke to the coaches about his desire to have a go and also about his concerns due to his impairment. The coaches carefully explained that he would be able to take part with some slight adaptions to equipment and technique. After 15 minutes and about 18 attempts, Peter finally succeeded in hitting the target. He was ecstatic and carried on to hit the target several more times before he left, thanking our 2 archery coaches for all their assistance.
The coaches told Peter that they had just started some open to all archery sessions which he may wish to join in. The sessions are held at Centre4, Wootton Road 10 am-12 noon every Sunday regardless of weather as there is an indoor option. The GHoPA programme and its coaches are delighted to now see Peter regularly attending those sessions. Other visitors attending the session acknowledge the huge changes in Peter as he continues to improve his archery skills despite his disability.
If you would like to try archery come along to our sessions on Sunday mornings 10am-12 noon at Centre4, Wootton Road. To see more details please visit our web page ghopa calendar
